History of reflexology
How does reflexology work?
The feet and hands contain certain points, or reflexes, which represent the rest of the body. These reflexes are worked upon during a treatment to clear away any congestion or imbalances that may be there, this works to encourage your body to heal itself: mentally, physically and spiritually.
Reflexologists do not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe.
Healing is a process: not an instant cure or fix.
A reflexologist does not heal, the body heals itself.
Who can benefit from reflexology?
Everyone! It is suitable for men, women, pregnant women, children and the elderly.
What are the benefits?
Encourages relaxation and reduces stress
Helps eliminate toxins
Promotes energy flow in the body & may relieve fatigue
Helps release endorphins (mood-lifting & pain-killing hormones) and serotonin (mood-lifting substance)
Gives a feeling of well-being
Blood and lymphatic circulations improved
Body is encouraged to heal and the whole system encouraged to rebalance
What does treatment involve?
On the first visit I will carry out a consultation in order to find out about your lifestyle and health (past and present). This information will be kept confidential at all times.
Once you have removed your socks and are comfortably reclined on the couch I will begin the treatment and proceed as follows:
- cleanse and examine your feet
- give you a foot massage to prepare the feet for the reflexology and to relax you
- use specific massage and pressure to work on the reflexes: special attention will be paid to areas that may feel congested or uncomfortable
- I will finish the treatment with a relaxing and grounding massage using oil
Sessions last an hour: however the first treatment takes 1½ hours due to the consultation.
How many treatments will I need?
Generally reflexology is most effective if a weekly treatment is given for about a month: after that monthly treatments are recommended. However it does depend entirely on the individual. We can discuss it further during our first meeting.
Does it hurt?
If an area is imbalanced it may feel uncomfortable or tender. I adapt my pressure to suit you so at no point should it be unbearable.
Can I have reflexology if I have ticklish feet?
I have encountered clients with ticklish feet who thoroughly enjoyed the treatment and did not feel tickled! So most probably, yes you can.
How will I feel after the treatment?
Most people feel very relaxed or rejuvenated after a treatment: they also feel a sense of well-being when they leave.
Please have a read through my testimonials to see how people have felt after a treatment.
Reflexology works to detoxify the body so you may experience increased perspiration, increased bowel movements, a headache or runny nose etc.... This is the body's way of riding itself of toxins: so it is a case of 'getting worse before it gets better'. You are encouraged to drink lots of water after a treatment to help with the detoxification process.
History of reflexology
Reflexology has been practised for thousands of years: a wall painting found in an Egyptian tomb suggests that reflexology was being used in Egypt as long ago as 2350BC, as well as by Chinese and Indian peoples.
Reflexology has been developed in the West during the past hundred years or so: particularly in Britain, the USA and Germany.
