Reiki FAQs

If the answer to your question isn't here, get in touch and I'll do my best to answer it for you.

What is Reiki?

Reiki (ray-ki) means 'universal life energy'. It is a form of hands-on healing that treats the mind, body and spirit. Reiki energy is directed through the practitioners hands which enables the energy to flow to the receiver.

What does treatment involve?

On the first visit I will carry out a consultation in order to find out about your lifestyle and health (past and present). This information will be kept confidential at all times.

You will be asked to lie back onto the couch, fully clothed, and enjoy the treatment! The treatment can also be given in a sitting position if preferred. I will gently place my hands on your body in a sequence of positions, holding for a few moments or longer if necessary.

Sessions last an hour: however the first treatment takes 1½ hours due to the consultation.

History of Reiki

The Reiki we know today was originated in Japan by Dr Mikao Usui. Dr Usui taught forms of spiritual and healing arts and provided a place for people to receive healing for free or a token sum. He apparently studied Buddhist, Taoist, Chinese Chi Kung, plus possibly Shinto and other healing systems intensively. After much study, he received the Reiki energies at the end of a 21 day fast and meditation on Mount Kurama. This occurred in a vision said to have involved being struck on the head by a beam of light and seeing the symbols traditionally invoked to activate Reiki.

After Usui passed away in 1926; one of his students, Dr Hayashi, opened a clinic and started training others. Through this clinic, Dr. Hayashi met Mrs Takata. She sought treatment and after only a few months was completely healed of several ailments. Mrs.Takata returned to Hawaii to establish a Reiki practice. Dr Hayashi followed her and initiated her as a Reiki Master. Most western Reiki practices are influenced by the teachings of Takata which are thought to vary slightly from the original ones of Usui.
